The shape of the shoe - why barefoot follows the shape of the foot

From an aesthetic point of view, this is a long-established design, but one that often fails to respect the natural shape of the foot. The human foot is naturally at its widest around the toes. The toes spread out while walking, help maintain stability, and play a part in transferring the body's weight.
